Intercontinental Shanghai Sheshan

Intercontinental Shanghai Sheshan

Intercontinental Shanghai Sheshan (Shimao Deep Pit Hotel) is located at No. 5888, Chenhua Road, Songjiang District. It is deeply hidden in an abandoned quarry pit at the foot of Sheshan Mountain, at an altitude of -88 meters. It is the world's first five-star hotel built in a mine pit. It was developed by Shimao Group over a period of 12 years and at a cost of 2 billion yuan. It was rated as one of the "Top Ten Architectural Wonders of the World" by the National Geographic Channel's "Great Engineering Tour" upon its opening in 2018. The hotel was designed by Martin Yorkman's team, with the theme of "Journey to the Center of the Earth". It integrates natural ecology with industrial aesthetics - the exposed rock texture on the cliff, the water curtain landscape of waterfalls cascading down, and the architectural details in the style of caves, all of which together form an immersive experience of "Mine and Italian Aesthetics". The 3D projection water screen in the center of the lobby interweaves with the light and shadow of the outdoor cliff waterfall, creating a visual wonder of the interplay of reality and illusion, and is hailed as "a hotel growing in nature".

The 336 guest rooms and suites are arranged in layers along the cliff, including underwater suites, duplex family suites and viewing terrace rooms. The underwater suite offers a view of fish swimming through floor-to-ceiling Windows. The duplex family suite replicates the "yacht deck" design, and the top-floor suite is equipped with private butler service. All guest rooms are equipped with standard smart temperature control systems, JBL audio systems, Nespresso coffee machines, Dyson hair dryers and Hansgrohe bathrooms. Some room types retain the texture of the quarry walkway, allowing you to feel the historical texture as you walk. The bathroom is equipped with Hansgrohe shower heads from Germany and BYREDO toiletries. The dry-wet separation design, combined with the floor heating system, creates a luxurious bathing experience.

The dining space can be called a "taste adventure" : The Fish Fire Specialty Restaurant is located on the 15th basement floor, surrounded by aquariums, offering seafood dishes such as lobster and abalone soup, and Argentine red shrimp. Window seats need to be reserved in advance to enjoy the best underwater view. CAI Feng Lou Chinese Restaurant specializes in Cantonese and local cuisine. Its signature dishes are jasmine scented silver cod and yellow croaker soup noodles. The Yuan Coffee All-Day Restaurant offers an international buffet, while the Red Bar, with its industrial design and creative cocktails, has become a hot spot for socializing at night.

The recreational facilities include a 14th-floor cave swimming pool (with a glass curtain wall design, allowing you to enjoy the cliff view while swimming), a Tenojian equipment gym, a spa center and a glass walkway. The hotel also offers activities such as rock climbing, boating and a children's club, which are suitable for family tourists. Within a three-kilometer radius, there are scenic spots such as Tianma Mountain Park, Shanghai Shimao Elf City Theme Park, and Chenshan Botanical Garden. It is within walking distance of the Smurfs Paradise, and only 5 kilometers away from Happy Valley and Maya Beach Water Park.

  • Near by The Bund

The hotel consists of two buildings - the historic main building and the modern tower. The exterior facade of the buildings blends British classicism and Baroque elements, with arched gates, Ionic columns and a 34-meter-long black and white marble corridor bar (once known as the "No. 1 Bar in the Far East") perfectly recreating the glory of a hundred years ago. The interior was designed by Japanese architect Kikutaro Shimoda. Blending decorative art with contemporary luxury, Swarovski crystal chandeliers and hand-painted murals interweave to create an immersive experience of "a new scene at every step".
  • Near by Jing'an Temple

As the pioneering work of the Pu series hotels, the hotel was designed by designer Jaya Ibrahim. With the concept of "Urban Paradise", it deeply integrates traditional Chinese architectural elements with modern minimalist aesthetics - the exterior facade adopts blue bricks, grey tiles and teak grilles. The 32-meter African teak long table and the golden brick floor in the lobby are of the same origin as the Forbidden City, complemented by the view of the floor-to-ceiling Windows with swaying bamboo shadows. Create an Oriental Zen-like space with "a new scene at every step".
  • Near by The Bund

The hotel was designed by G.A. Design with the concept of "Flowing Light and Colorful Splendor", integrating Shanghai-style cultural symbols with modern trend elements. The exterior facade is outlined with modern lines, while the interior creates a collision of historical charm and futurism through large color blocks of red, orange and blue, reconstruction of Shikumen elements and light and shadow art installations. The 42-storey building houses 374 guest rooms, all equipped with panoramic floor-to-ceiling Windows offering direct views of the Huangpu River and the skyline of Lujiazui. The interior decoration details inspired by the old Shanghai sauce gardens and the bold use of colors interpret the dual charm of "tradition and avant-garde".
